Anesco: 2050 zero emissions target is about ‘certainty not subsidy’

Anesco Chairman Steve Shine OBE

Anesco, the UK’s leading renewables developer, has welcomed the news that the government is setting out a roadmap for the UK to reach zero emissions by 2050, but warns that greater certainty will be key, if that ambition is to be realised.

Steve Shine, Anesco executive chairman, commented: “We applaud Claire Perry for driving forward the zero emissions agenda, which follows grave warnings from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that urgent and unprecedented changes are needed to control global warming.

“At Anesco we fully support a move towards zero emissions – and believe it is a target that can be realised.  But it needs to be supported by a strong, long term strategy, that gives the renewables industry, investors and businesses like ourselves, certainty.

“That really is the key. Certainty not subsidy will be the route to zero emissions and we need coordinated policy across all government departments that will fully support the development of the infrastructure needed to deliver it.”

Anesco is the UK market leader for energy storage, with an operational battery storage portfolio set to exceed 380MW by 2020. The company has developed 102 solar farms to date, while its renewables operations and maintenance arm is currently monitoring over 21,500 assets. In September 2017, Anesco developed the UK’s first subsidy-free solar farm, after reengineering the process of design.
